BA and MA programmes Our Degree Programmes
The Institute for Semitic Studies offers two bachelor programmes and one master programme. The Semitic Languages and Cultures programme (50%) provides foundational knowledge of Semitic languages and their cultural contexts, with a focus on Arabic and an additional language such as Aramaic or Hebrew. The Semitic Languages and Cultures programme (25%) focuses on modern standard Arabic, classical texts and the dialects of Arabic. Both programmes thus offer broad linguistic and cultural perspectives.
BA Semitic Languages and Cultures (50 %)
This programme offers a comprehensive introduction to Semitic languages and their cultures. In addition to learning Arabic (written language and spoken dialect), students are required to choose either Aramaic (Syriac Aramaic or modern Neo-Aramaic) or Hebrew (Biblical and modern Hebrew) as a second language.
BA Semitic Languages and Cultures (25 %)
In this programme, students are trained in various aspects of the Arabic language. The focus is on learning modern standard Arabic. In addition, classical Arabic texts are studied to develop an understanding of the historical and literary development of the language. Another distinctive feature of the programme is the introduction to the Damascus dialect, spoken in Syria and neighbouring regions.
MA Semitic Languages and Cultures
