Institute of Semitic Studies

About us
The Institute of Semitic Studies at Heidelberg University is dedicated to the study of Semitic languages such as Arabic, Aramaic and Classical Ethiopic. The degree programme in Semitic Studies provides in-depth knowledge of the linguistics, literature and culture of this language family. A distinctive feature is its interdisciplinary orientation, complemented by projects such as the Research Centre for Aramaic Studies and the Semitic Sound Archive.

Studies
The study of Semitic Studies at Heidelberg offers a solid training in several Semitic languages such as Arabic, Aramaic, Hebrew and Classical Ethiopic. Students acquire not only linguistic but also philological and cultural competences. One of the central principles of the Semitic Studies programme is the connection between classical written languages and modern dialects, enabling a deeper understanding of historical developments in language. Written assignments may be submitted in English at all stages of study and some courses may also be conducted in English.

Semitic Sound Archive
The Semitic Sound Archive is a project for the digital preservation of recordings of Semitic languages and dialects and their publication on the internet, originally funded by the German Research Foundation.

Research Centre for Aramaic Studies
The Research Centre for Aramaic Studies deals with all aspects of the social life of the Aramaeans (i. e. Syrians or Syrian Christians), both in their original homeland and in the diaspora. Particular focus is placed on language, literature, art, history, sociology and migration, with special attention to the more recent diaspora experience.
